ARE YOU SECURING YOUR FUTURE?
Written by Kennan Cooley
As women we make sure we take care of everyone in our family. We take care of our kids, our mates and our parents. However we often wait to take care of ourselves.
Recently, I had the horrible experience of having my dad have an unexpected heart attack. He was the kind of person who ate right, exercised vigorously and avoided the dangers of smoking and drinking. Despite his best efforts, he still had a heart attack. Fortunately he is recovering but I have to help manage his healthcare now. It caused me to really think about the impact of a possible sudden health issue and how it would affect my life and the lives around me.
We need to make sure our lives now reflect the lives we want to live now and the lives we want to have in the future.
Most of us know the dangers of smoking, unhealthy eating and not exercising. But there are also financial health dangers. One of the most overlooked financial health risks is not planning for long-term healthcare. Most of us worry about making sure we have enough retirement for our future but what happens if we get sick? Will we have to take our hard earned retirement and use it to pay for long-term healthcare? Most insurance does not cover it completely and most of us fail to get proper coverage before it is too late.
According to the US Government on Aging, two thirds of Americans turning 65 in 2015 will need some longterm healthcare.
What will long-term healthcare cover? It takes
care of long and short-term rehabilitation as well as in-home and facility
nursing care. With the national average costs of $75,000 or more per year for
care, it is a serious financial burden to make sure we cover for our family and
ourselves.
Long-term healthcare can affect your future and your family's future. If someone has to care for you due to a sudden illness, they will probably not have their life ready for such a drastic change. If we don't have the proper long-term health insurance coverage, we are opening up the possibility that our illness will drain our family's financial, emotional and physical livelihood.
It is why we need to make a choice today. I don't want my kids to have to deal with my health issues. Instead of having to care for me, I just want my kids to care about me!
I have made my changes. I hope you do too!

OPRAH'S SUPER SOUL SUNDAY
GIVES YOU GUIDANCE IN THE DARK
written by Kennan Cooley
Do you have those moments where you want to be positive but it's not really working? The truth is we all do! We all have those moments where despite our best effort to live in the "light" of life, darkness takes over. Oprah's guest, Reverend Barbara Brown Taylor gave us permission to embrace the dark. We can often feel like we are making more mistakes than we are succeeding. Other times, we can feel like life is giving us more dark than light. Taylor encourages us to embrace what those moments mean for our lives. When we are in the dark, it is when we sleep. It is when our bodies and minds get a chance to rest. Darkness during the night is the time we use to refuel. Darkness during our lives can also provide the time for us to stop and refuel our minds and spirits. It can give us the chance to check on the direction of our lives.Taylor suggests that life isn't a train ride with a destination but a sailboat ride where we wake up everyday to check the wind and decide on our course. If we wake up everyday ready to find out where God may lead us instead of leading God we are more likely to find our value for life. The dark moments of life can cause fear because we can't clearly see what is coming. We can search for light just to feel safe. Taylor says to find safety and comfort in the dark so we can find new light and find a new gratefulness for the light of our lives. We can find hope and a new brightness in the blessings of God when we get our light from the dark.
