Written by Kennan Cooley
Raheem DeVaughn held a "Queen For A Day" event through his Love Life foundation for a room full of women. But these are not just any women. These are strong, determined women who survived domestic abuse and now share their stories of triumph.DeVaughn partnered with Lyn Twyman of the L.A.S.E.R.S. domestic violence awareness foundation to find the women to pamper for the day. The ladies were treated to a delicious brunch of chicken and waffles by Kitchen Cray and nail, massage and hair treatments by the host venue Maisie Dunbar Spa Lounge in Silver Spring, Maryland. The ladies also had an opportunity to share their stories with the public through TV One's interactive digital programming website, Interactive One. Each lady took the mic and gave their inspirational stories of triumph over their difficult domestic violent situations. These interviews will be a part of a series of webisodes that will air on the website starting February 23rd.Throughout the day it was evident that each lady thoroughly enjoyed the pampering. The inspirational day ended with Raheem DeVaughn singing a couple of his new songs and a few familiar songs….and of course "Queen". DeVaughn’s “Queen For A Day” event gave the women encouragement to move forward, tell their stories and inspire other women to leave their domestic violent situations and start a living like a queen.

DeVaughn’s Love Life Foundation seeks to support an array of community issues such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, autism, mental illness, music and of course domestic violence. If you would like to donate or find out more about his organization, visit www.lovelifefoundationmv.org

VICKI IRVIN HELPS WOMEN ACHIEVE SUCCESS THROUGH BUSINESS, BEAUTY AND BALANCE

Vicki Irvin is a self-made millionaire whose mission is to share her successful strategies with thousands of women seeking to further their personal and business lives.  Her Superwoman Lifestyle brand promotes business, beauty and balance as a three point strategy for women. Her focus is helping women to take care of their professional careers, take care of their beauty inside and out and find a balance between the two. She has also written a book called Brand Building Blueprint to further women’s education and success.

Irvin offers seminars and conferences throughout the year in which she gives women valuable knowledge about effective marketing strategies, branding their businesses, increasing their wealth and finding success. Because many of Irvin’s conferences are three full days at a higher price point, once a year Irvin offers the essence of her conferences in a one day seminar.

This year Irvin partnered with actor Darrin Henson to help women. Henson is also an advocate of personal growth and self improvement. He has written two books which help readers focus inward. His thought provoking books, Intimate Thoughts  and Ain’t That The Truth express through prose and spoken word inspirational thoughts and truth that Henson wanted to share with the world.

Irvin and Henson made an excellent partnership because they want people to stretch themselves to become who they were meant to be.

“Comfortable is the cousin to failure,” says Henson.

“You have to willing to talk about yourself,” says Irvin.

“We are born winners. We aren’t born losers. We are born choosers,” says Henson.

Attendees came away from the one day conference with a renewed focus and desire to achieve their destiny and personal victories.

Tonight television writer, show creator and producer, Shonda Rhimes will make television history by having three prime time television shows airing on the industry’s most popular night - Thursday night- or as ABC has deemed it, TGIT(Thank God It’s Thursday). Perhaps tonight should be deemed TGFSR - Thank God For Shonda Rhimes!

Shonda Rhimes has garnered the title as today’s hottest show producer & creator with three concurrent shows airing on television. Her outstanding accomplishment has not been duplicated by anyone since Aaron Spelling’s reign in 1978 when he was producing one-third of ABC’s programming. Rhimes accomplishment has pushed the doors wide open not just for women or African Americans, but all underserved writers and producers who want a chance to get their ideas realized.

Rhimes night of television shows - also known as Shondaland - begins with her previously running,  first major prime-time show, Grey’s Anatomy. This show is a medical drama featuring the ever changing lives of the doctors at Grey Sloan hospital. The main character, Meredith Grey, endures personal highs and lows while maintaining a ceaseless dedication to her profession.

Scandal, the second show in the Shondaland’s line up, is a hot, multi-story, drama unveiling the unscrupulous and convoluted private lives of the political community including the scandalous affair of Olivia Pope and Fitzgerald Grand - the President of the United States. While their public roles are clearly defined, their lives portray a different story behind closed doors.

Rhimes newest venture, How To Get Away With Murder, is billed by ABC as a “masterful, sexy, suspense-driven, legal thriller”. The network’s promotions tantalize the viewer with intense and interesting previews that have us waiting with baited breath for the pilot airing tonight at 10pm. In this show, teacher Annalise Keating, takes her students and the viewers on a mental ride of the under-publicized and dirty side of the law.

Shonda Rhimes, has opened the industry’s door wide open for many future writers and producers. She will be remembered in history as the woman who helped to break the network “glass ceiling”. We applaud her dedication to her craft and most of all - her calling. She has shared her gift and for that we are grateful. Congratulations Ms. Rhimes! You are our "she-ro"!

I'M SORRY THAT I'M SORRY!

Written by Kennan Cooley

Do you ever find yourself saying, “I’m sorry” a lot?  Do you ever wonder why?

For many women saying I am sorry is easier than saying something they really feel.  Many women have developed the habit of apologizing for having an opinion or stating a fact that someone else may not like.

Apologizing is an important part of communication. However some women overuse it and it reflects as insecurity rather than confident authority.

You are a strong woman in a position that requires you to make decisions. You are good at making decisions but you are also good at apologizing for them.

“John we need to make our deadline for our client today.  I am sorry you are unable to leave early to play golf like you asked me earlier.”  John grumbles mumbling words of discontent and later you overhear him speaking poorly of you to his co-workers.

As the supervisor, you have a responsibility to ensure all deadlines and goals are achieved despite the response of those around you. Your job is on the line. If the project falls behind, your boss doesn’t go find John. He finds you!

If you are uncomfortable with the direct approach but need to establish your authority, you can say, “Hi John. I really appreciate the work you have done on this project. You have helped us achieve an excellent product. I need you to stay and help finish today so we can all go play a round of golf later!”

In the second scenario you took time to appreciate him (even if he didn’t completely deserve it, he will think he did or his guilt will get him into gear) and you enlisted his help to finish on time. No where in the scenario did you need to apologize for doing your job!

We can also use it in our personal lives as we deal with our mates, children, family and friends. We may not feel comfortable in our thoughts and opinions so we mask it in an apology. When we say, “I’m sorry” and we have done nothing wrong, we give the world permission to treat us in a way that blames us because we accept it. If you have done wrong, apologize. If it was not you, allow someone else to take the responsibility for the relationship.

If you are an “over-apologizer” examine why you use it. Maybe it lies in how you feel about yourself and your right to be you!

MY MAYA...ODE TO MAYA ANGELOU!

Today, we loss an international icon, Maya Angelou.

Why do I call her “My Maya”?  Maya Angelou was my inspiration for speaking from your inner voice of wisdom and intellect. She had a way of finding the lesson in her life and the lives of others and placing those lessons in books, prose and poems.  Her mere presence spoke of dignity, kindness, intellect, beauty, finesse and more. She commanded respect and attention from everyone she encountered.

I have read many of her books and poems and watched her speak. While I never had the honor of interviewing her, I have often spoken to her in my mind. I asked her how do you know so much and how are you able to share it so eloquently? I heard her say, “Baby, you just do what you were meant to do and it will work.”

So I take my work – my words – and give honor to you Dr. Maya Angelou!

THE ESSENCE OF MAYA ANGELOU

M- Magnificent speaker
A- Angelic voice
Y- Youthful at heart
A - Always giving

A -Aspiring greatness
N - Never doubting
G -Genius on earth
E -Ever evolving
L -Love like no other
O - Outstanding woman
U will never be forgotten

Love and miss you already!
